The story begins in 2006. James, a Chinese businessman who had lived in Europe for many years, came across Shere Village in Surrey during an impromptu countryside excursion. There, he discovered an ancient estate nestled upon fifty acres of serene land—and as it happened, the owner was just looking to sell.
James decided to purchase the estate without hesitation. He understood that what truly moves the heart is not luxury, but the warmth that time has left behind. While preserving the estate's original character, he infused it with an Eastern touch of delicacy and warmth—converting the old stables into cozy guest rooms, restoring the overgrown courtyard into a tranquil garden, and transforming the abandoned wine cellar into a welcoming lounge. And so, Fernholt's very first resort quietly came to life in Surrey, England.
Over the next decade and more, James carried this passion for countryside living to the rest of the world. He traveled across Europe, America, and Australia, seeking out estates equally cherished by time—a vineyard estate in California's Napa Valley, a eucalyptus-rimmed lodge in Australia's Yarra Valley, a log cabin retreat in Canada's Banff National Park, a lavender farmhouse in Provence, a centuries-old stone villa in Tuscany, an alpine chalet at the foot of the Matterhorn in Zermatt. Each property stirred his heart just as the one in Shere Village had done years before. At the same time, Fernholt also put down roots in cosmopolitan centers such as London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Barcelona, Vienna, and Lisbon—seamlessly blending the tranquility of the countryside with the vibrancy of urban life.
James often says, “Fernholt is not just a place to escape to—it is a return to life itself.” It is this very philosophy that keeps every Fernholt estate imbued with the warmth of home—no matter where you are in the world, the moment you step through the door, it feels as though you have come back to a place you have always known.
Today, every door of Fernholt is open to the world, with a special welcome extended to guests from China, inviting them to experience the authentic countryside life of Europe, America, and Australia.
